Our National Anthem
And now the rest of the story!
It is often been said that the motto, "In God we trust" was not of any historical significance to our nation's history until it was added to our coinage in the 1950's. Our National Anthem disproves this argument. "The Star Spangled Banner" is one of the most famous songs in our nation yet very few know the full song. The words of the Hymn were written by Francis Scott Key in 1814 and the tune was attributed to John Stafford (1775). While many are familiar with the first verse, their is actually a second verse. The second verse notes our motto as "In God is our trust". Now you know you know the rest of the story.
First Verse
O say, can you see, by the dawns early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilights last gleaming,
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thro the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets red glare, the bombs bursting in air
Gave proof thro' the night that our flag was still there.
O say, does that Star-Spangled Banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
Second Verse
O thus be it ever when free men shall stand
Between their loved homes and the wars desolation;
Blest with victory and peace, may the heav'n rescued land
Praise the pow'r that hath made and preserved us a nation!
Then conquor we must, when our cause it is just;
And this be our motto: "in God is our trust!"
And the Star-Spangled Banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
