NASSAU COUNTY CIVIC ASSOCIATION, INC. "The government is us, we are the government, you and I." Teddy Roosevelt |
The Nassau County Civic Association is not opposed to reasonable salary increases for members of the Nassau County legislature and their leadership; however we believe that double digit salary increases are unwarranted for several reasons:
The current economic climate has affected working families in Nassau County who now struggle to make a mortgage payment or accept a pay cut just to keep their jobs. Some have no jobs. Our legislators are no different and should lead by example.
The salary increases range from 32% to as much as 47%. This is unreasonable considering public employees receive annual raises of 3-4% and some in the private sector have not received any raise.
Nassau County is currently in a fiscal crisis with a possible budget deficit of $150 million dollars. One of the factors that led to current economic mess was spending.
This past November, one of the most hotly contested issues during the election was the 60% salary increase for the County’s four executive positions passed by the prior legislative majority. Isn’t it hypocritical to claim that the 60% salary increase was unjustified but now the current raises are justified?
The Nassau County Civic Association has vigorously opposed the prior legislative majority’s effort to vote themselves double digit raises and the 60% salary increase for the four executive positions. It was unwarranted and unjustified then and it is unwarranted and unjustified now.
We call on the Nassau County Legislature and the leadership to reconsider their salary increase and do what is right for the People of Nassau County.
