Director Paul Kosowski briefly discussed the plan by both the majority and minority leaders of the Nassau County legislature to amend the county charter in April in order to hike their salary. He explained that currently, any vote to raise legislator's salaries must be voted on by the legislature in the current term and cannot take effect until after the next election when a new legislature is seated. He advised that the plan was to deliver a 19-0 vote and once the charter was amended, hold a vote in August raising their salaries. Based on information from credible sources, the story was posted on the NCCA website on March 22nd and confirmed by Newsday on March 24th. As Legislators Mejias and Denenberg have come out against the plan, it appears that no action will be taken at this time to amend the charter.

Our featured speaker was Dave Karnes. He was a man on a mission who immediately went into action following the 911 attack. His efforts led to the discovery of two Port Authority Police Officers who were found alive under the rubble of the twin towers. In an act of unselfishness love of country, the retired United States Marine re-enlisted and served several tours of duty in Iraq.  His story was featured in the film, "World Trade Center" starring Nicholas Cage.
