Update: Legislator David Mejias clarifies his position on opposing Spitzer's license scheme

During a conversation today with the NCCA, Mr. Mejias stated that he was never provided with a copy of  Peter Schmidt's letter and would not sign the letter as Schmidt cannot draft a letter with proper grammar. He accused Republicans of lying about his position falsely claiming that he supports Spitzer's plan. He stated that due to the political atmosphere, he would be unable to co-sign a letter with the Republicans. He then indicated that he would draft and send his own letter to Spitzer opposing the plan.

Push for Nassau Legislature to oppose Spitzer's driver license plan

As national security is everyone's business, a member of the NCCA board addressed the legislature today about the Governor's plan to weaken identity standards and grant driver licenses to illegal aliens. Citing the example of Suffolk County Executive Levy and the Suffolk County legislature, a request was made for all members of the Nassau legislature to send a letter to Governor Spitzer opposing his scheme and for him to reconsider.

Presiding Officer Jacobs indicated that the legislature will caucus and will consider the request. Minority Leader Schmidt stated that the nine members of the Republican minority are in agreement with the request and have already drafted a letter. Legislator Lisanne Altmann indicated that she would not sign the letter.
