NY Says Race Quotas to Continue

SUNY & CUNY to Continue to Use Race as a Factor in Admissions

Reacting to guidance from the federal government to use race neutral policies in admissions, the governor directed both the State University of New York (SUNY) and the City University of New York (CUNY) to continue to use race as a factor. According to Cuomo,  “The Trump Administration’s move to rescind the guidelines on using race in college admissions is a blatant attempt to limit the participation of minorities in higher education,”. He went on to say, “It is part of a troubling trend by the President and his administration to alienate minorities and build walls to diversity and equal participation in society.” He also noted that 76% of CUNY’s student body are minorities while the figure is nearly 45% for SUNY.

Examining the 2010 census figures, whites comprised 44.6% of the population of NYC while minorities as a whole comprised 55.4%. As for the state population, whites comprised 65.7% and minorities 34.3%. Thus it is clear that whites are unrepresented at CUNY schools by over 20% and are also unrepresented at SUNY schools by 10%. Why then should race continue to be used as a factor in admissions? The truth is diversity is a code word for quotas. Even so, the quotas only apply to minorities and do not include all races which result in the large percentages of under representation of whites.

It is truely amazing that Cuomo believes and supports state sponsored discrimination as long as it is directed at a certain race or class of people. His defense of the policy is irrational and is not supported by statistical facts which he even admits while citing the numbers. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts said it best in Ricci v. DeStefanon, "The way to stop discrimination on the basis of race is to stop discriminating on the basis of race.”
